Desk Placement for Video Calls in a Small Room

The best desk position for video calls is not always the best-looking wall. Window direction, background, camera height and room traffic affect how professional and comfortable the setup feels.

Face toward the useful light

A window in front of you or slightly to the side can provide flattering light. A bright window directly behind you often makes the camera expose for the background and leave your face too dark.

Give the background some depth

If possible, avoid sitting with your back almost touching a wall. Even a little distance can make the frame feel less cramped and gives you more control over what the camera sees.

Do not put the desk where every door crossing is visible

In bedrooms and shared rooms, consider who walks behind you. A technically perfect lighting position may still be distracting if the camera points at the main doorway.

Camera height matters as much as desk location

Raise the webcam close to eye level before buying more lighting. A laptop on a low desk often creates a worse call angle than the room itself.

Test the call view before moving furniture

Open your camera app and place the device temporarily in each candidate location. Check face light, glare, background clutter and door traffic before committing.
