How to light a home-office desk without creating glare

Good desk lighting should illuminate the work surface without producing a bright reflection in the display or a harsh contrast between the screen and the room.

Keep direct light off the screen

Aim task lighting toward the desk rather than straight at the monitor.

Use layers

Combine practical task lighting with softer room light so the display is not a bright rectangle floating in darkness.

Position for handedness

For writing and paper work, place the lamp so your dominant hand does not cast the main shadow over the page.

Consider footprint

On a small desk, clamp lamps and monitor bars can return several useful inches of surface.

Workroom Standard conclusion

The best lighting setup is usually not the brightest. It is the one that reduces contrast and glare while keeping the work surface clearly visible.
